UniFi gateways in the UDM Pro, SE, Pro Max, and EFG line ship with modest CPUs and no hardware acceleration for PPPoE. An ISP link running over PPPoE therefore lands far below its rated speed. ArcBox Labs had a 5 Gbps PPPoE line sitting behind one and never came close to it, and the load eventually started to affect the gateway's stability.
The fix is to stop handing the gateway the part it is bad at. A separate device does the PPPoE dialing and passes the connection along in half bridge. The UniFi gateway goes back to routing and nothing else.
