Immich stores and organises a photo and video library on hardware you control. Uploading, tagging and search work the way they do in a cloud album; what changes is where the files sit, which is your own machine rather than someone's service. The implementation leans on performance, which starts to matter once a library stops being small. The trade is the obvious one: somebody has to run the server, and that somebody is you.
